EBC: Trek Report Overview

Overview

Am back from a very successful EBC & Kalapathar trek (refer to my previous post for trip planning notes).

Here is the modified itinerary that we followed:

Day 1: May 3, Saturday
Bangalore - Delhi - Kathmandu

Day 2: May 4, Sunday
Kathmandu sightseeing (Pashupathinath temple, sunset from Swayambunath)

Day 3: May 5, Monday
Kathmandu - Lukla - Phakding
We took around 4 hours for the Lukla - Phakding trek. Mostly downhill, we took it very slow.

Day 4: May 6, Tuesday
Phakding - Namche Bazar
Permits at Jhorsale, another 2 hours to Namche.

Day 5: May 7, Wednesday
Namche Bazar, Acclimatization climb to Everest View Hotel

Day 6: May 8, Thursday
Namche Bazar - Thyangboche
Around 5.5 hours trek.

Day 7: May 9, Friday
Thyangboche - Dingboche
7 hrs trek with stops.

Day 8: May 10, Saturday
Dingboche
Acclimatization day, climb to Chukung (the highest permanent settlement)

Day 9: May 11, Sunday
Dingboche - Lobuche
6.5 hours trek.

Day 10: May 12, Monday
Lobuche - Gorak shep - EBC - Gorak shep

Gorak shep - Kalapatthar - Pangboche

Day 12: May 14, Wednesday
Pangboche - Namche Bazar

Day 13: May 15, Thursday
Namche Bazar - Phakding

Day 14: May 16, Friday
Phakding - Lukla

Day 15: May 17, Saturday
Lukla - Kathmandu

Day 16: May 18, Sunday
Kathmandu - Delhi - Bangalore

Out of 23 people in the team, 22 made it to EBC and 6 to Kalapathar. I made it to both EBC & Kalapathar.

The trek was organized by Karnataka Mountaineering Association (http://www.kmaindia.org/) and it was led by Vasumathi Srivasan and Smitha Sinivasan (Deputy Lead). Total cost was Rs 42,000 including return airfare from Bangalore-Delhi-Kathmandu-Lukla and basic food and lodging.

  1. Beautiful Pics Roshin .... walking us once again through the entire route .... with great nostalgia .... but this time sitting in our 'arm chairs', 'office chairs','rocking chairs'!! :) ... Do I regret the Trek? ... oh no, I don't ... hope to do it all over again some day soon!!! ... Call of the mountains ... How can I resist .... And the next time hope to make it to Kala Patthar too!!! and Perhaps add another peak for good measure :)

    Why don't you also mention the total cost incurred in this trip ? This will help other for planning.

  5. Roshin, I'm from Bangalore and off to EBC next month. I need information on the TIMS registration. I've heard its complusory since Jan 2008. Is this true? Did you guys get this done in KTM? Thanks!

  6. @chintu - we got the TIMS through our agent in Kathmandu: Himalaya Expeditions. They had organized the entire expedition and provided the guides. TIMS had to be shown at Jorsale check post.
